Abstract

Written by Muzaffereddin Galib, Bir Bakış (“A Glance”) 1892) is examined as the earliest known Turkish serialized novel published in Cyprus, where “first” functions not as an aesthetic judgment but as an indicator of earliness grounded in publication context and supported by archival materials. Based on a review of extant installments—and supported by tables documenting intrusive narration and recurrent Divanderived diction—the analysis demonstrates that the novel develops a transitional narrative aesthetic shaped by its interventionist narrator, meddah-like tone, and reliance on classical Ottoman literary conventions; the opening Marmara description, with its nesib-like lyricism, parallels Namık Kemal’s Çamlıca passage in İntibah (“The Awakening”) 1873). The work shows affinities with İntibah through its moralizing voice, “love at first sight” motif, and sheltered young male protagonist recalling Ali Bey, while diverging from Sezai’s Sergüzeşt (“Adventure”) 1887) through limited realism, minimal psychological depth, and sparse spatial detail—the brief “ten room, north–south oriented” house description exemplifying early realist experimentation. The fact that Galib, like many Tanzimat novelists, was a journalist underscores a center–periphery parallel, showing that the newspaper-based origins of Ottoman fiction were reproduced in Cyprus. Ultimately, Bir Bakış is significant less for artistic refinement than for marking a foundational stage in the localization of serialized fiction, illuminating the center–periphery circulation of narrative forms and the hybrid character of early Ottoman novelistic modernity.
